Description

Places through which oxygenated waters, cool as a result of their shady position or their having freshly surfaced, permanently trickle, typically colonised by carpets of bryophytes and of a taxonomically diverse set of convergently creeping, shallowly rooting herbs.

Relations with other habitat types

The position of these communities within EUNIS is somewhat uncertain, the definitions of P2N and Q241 being almost identical. The biotope, with running waters preventing the build-up of soil (especially in steep places) evokes Q521, associated with more eutrophic waters (polluted or having leached larger watersheds) and composed by similarly prostrate but larger plants. If waters are carbonate-rich, tufa-forming communities, here included in U3D1, develop.
