Description

Alkaline fens, often dominated by Schoenus nigricans, in slopes soaked by hard-water springs at mid and low elevations.

Protection

Protected by the EU Habitat Directive, mostly under the code 6410 ("Molinia meadows on calcareous, peaty or clayey-silt-laden soils (Molinion caeruleae]"). Locally, an alternative protection under 6420 ("Mediterranean tall humid grasslands of the Molinio-Holoschoenion") or under the prioritary 7210* ("Calcareous fens with Cladium mariscus and species of the Caricion davallianae") might be warranted.

Regional distribution

Mostly distributed in calcareous hills and mountains of the eastern half of the ecorregion, usually at lower elevations than Q41x. Less frequently it occurs in sea-cliffs on basic rocks and in Galician ultramafic outcrops.
