R563 Pyreneo-Iberian tall-herb communities

New search

Description

Stands of tall, large-leaved forbs on deep, humid but not waterlogged soils by streams or under north-facing cliffs in rainy mountain areas. Frequent small-scale disturbances by avalanches and the erosive action of rill waters prevent their eventual overshadowing and replacement by woody vegetation, and provide nutrients to support this luxuriant forblands, including the raw materials for the phytochemical defenses with which it is typically protected.

Protection

Protected under the code 6430 ("Hydrophilous tall herb fringe communities of plains and of the montane to alpine levels") by the EU Habitat Directive.
