Overview

This European diploid species occurs naturally only in the eastern border of the ecoregion, not far from the Pyrenees. It can be distinguished by a) the deeper teeth in the leaves, which are often rhomboidal in shape, b) the idiosyncratic pendant young twigs, glabrous but with abundant resinous glands, and c) the large, deep, black diamond-shaped cracks in the bark of adult trees.
