Crocus serotinus

New search

Overview

It can be readily distinguished from Crocus nudiflorus, the other autumn-flowering regional Crocus (with which it may produce occasional sterile hybrids, described as C. asturicus), by the hairy throat, the ivory or yellowish stamen filaments and the generally shorter flower tube, as well as for leaves being already more or less developed during the anthesis. Recent work by Kerndorff & Harpke in Stapfia 113: 5-32 (2022) concludes that Iberoatlantic plants don't correspond to the true C. serotinus but to a closely related but distinct, apparently diploid species: Crocus cobbii.
