Overview

The study area (except the Basque Country and a few other watersheds) is mostly occupied by "Alnus lusitanica", a tetraploid species that differs from "Alnus glutinosa" in that it generally shows a straight leaf apex (rather than emarginate), a longer peduncle of the female catkin, and broader, shorter leaves (Cuerdo et al. 2025. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.flora.2025.152723).
